Western square dancing was born when the first settlers arrived in America. As entertainment, these settlers would gather every week and dance their worries away. They each had their different kind of step and style. After a while nobody could remember what the original dance step was. Sooner or later, they came up with the idea of a caller who would call out the different step or pattern of a dance so people can continue. Square dancing was born. It did change over time but basically it is still lively and fun.
Usually the proper cloth to wear to square dance is rather formal: for male dancers, long-sleeved western shirts are the most appropriated thing to wear, and of course pants that match your partner’s outfit; for female dancers, frilly skirts and petticoats are very original, but during the present years, “prairie skirts” are appropriate too.
Now the thing is you don’t have to be dressed up all the time when you are square dancing. Because most of the time, square dancing attires are very expensive, probably $60 to $150. So at a lot of events, you don’t have to be fully dressed.
Another thing to make sure is the comfortable level of your outfit, especially for females. Making sure our outfit won’t be ruined by your moves is very important. There are a lot of circular motions in square dance, so when you try on the skirt, make several turns and see if it falls back into place. Also the waist is very important; you want to make sure it stays in place and doesn’t suffocate you.
