Square Dancing

Square Dancing is an American country dance where couples form a square. There are two types of square dancing today, and they are known as western and traditional. Both are similar, however one typically uses a spokesperson to call out the moves during the dance. The traditional styles do not use this type of technique. This dance is very up beat and is loved by many. Old or young, it is really easy to get wrapped up in enjoying this long lived dance.

Western square dancing originated back in the 17th century, and fell by the way side several years later. However, back in the 1930s, Native Americans resurrected the dance and were determined to keep it alive. They began to teach it to many and participate in this dance at many functions. The extrovert that usually acted as the spokeperson during this dance was to help those who may have forgotten the steps to the dance. As the dance became more popular and many people were becoming familiar with this dance, their need for the spokesperson was less. This brought about the traditional square dancing where you don’t use the spokesperson, and you dance to different music. This dance is also known as folk dancing today, and is still done by many people all across the world.

No matter which type of square dancing you choose, you are guaranteed to enjoy every minute of participating in this dance. It is recommended that you choose the western dance if you are not very familiar with the steps.
